Why Employees Misunderstand One Another in the Workplace

August 6, 2015 By JaneCranston Leave a Comment

Employees MisunderstandI have recently been coaching pairs. Not romantic couples but people who either work together as colleagues, supervisors and direct reports, or equals who have different responsibilities in their organization and need to collaborate.

It got me thinking, why do employees misunderstand one another? What are the sources of misunderstanding and conflict in the workplace?” Why do smart, talented, well-meaning people, not get along? Why do some people act like oil and water when they have to work with one another? [Read more…]

Workplace Issues Start at the Top

Workplace Issues Start at the Top

When parents haul their adolescent into the counselor’s office, it doesn’t take long for any trained professional to realize the core of the problem is often the adults — the kid is just acting out the chaos.

The same can be said for senior leaders and staff employees in the workplace. If you’re looking for the source of workplace issues? Focus up. [Read more…]

Communication Problems at Work — Some Simple Solutions

June 25, 2015 By JaneCranston Leave a Comment

Communication Problems at WorkToo many emails, no face-to-face, limited phone, words for the sake of words rather than content, no feedback, too much feedback. These are but a few of the communication problems hindering our ability to interact with one another and share and disseminate information effectively. [Read more…]

Changing Your Leadership Behavior in the Workplace

June 11, 2015 By JaneCranston Leave a Comment

Leadership Behavior Stop ItAs most of you know, I focus most of my executive coaching on workplace issues. Granted, many of the so called “issues” are problems many people wish they had — how to get to the next level, enhancing your branding and delivery of self, and transforming yourself from a manger to a leader.

What happens when a manager or executive has self-destructive or organization-harming leadership behaviors? Then what do we do? How do they change? [Read more…]

Why Micro-Managing Doesn’t Work

May 28, 2015 By JaneCranston Leave a Comment

Why Micro-Managing Doesn’t WorkWell-respected leadership coach, Marshall Goldsmith, in his best-selling book, “What Got You Here Won’t Get You There,” states, “The higher you go the more the problems are behavioral.” I agree. The challenges of many of my high-level executive coaching clients is not that they don’t have the smarts, the knowledge, or the drive to succeed, it’s their controlling behavior that prevents them, their people, and the organization from reaching full potential. How to Achieve Leadership Status in a Team – One Simple Step

April 30, 2015 By JaneCranston Leave a Comment

Achieve Leadership Status in a Team

I have recently worked with a number of senior level executive coaching clients who are attempting to establish themselves in new roles, with new teams, or both.

The creation of temporary, diverse teams has become even more prevalent; the need may occur a number of times within an ever shortening period of time. Despite my coaching clients’ excellent reputations in past positions, they still need to sell themselves in these new positions and roles. And, they must do it quickly and effectively. But how? It’s Time to Ask, “What is Your Moral Bucket List?”

April 16, 2015 By JaneCranston Leave a Comment

Moral Bucket ListIf you are a regular reader of mine (thank you!), you know I spend most of my time and words talking about the value of goals, hitting and stretching targets, building that resume and career. This is my professional side; an aspect of me but far from a complete picture and surely not the only way I want to be perceived. [Read more…]

Creating Goals That Work

April 2, 2015 By JaneCranston Leave a Comment

Creating Goals that WorkI’m a big advocate of creating goals for myself and others. I encourage my executive coaching clients to create goals for themselves and the people they lead and manage. The challenge is to know the types of goals and how to use them constructively. [Read more…]

The Value of Work

March 19, 2015 By JaneCranston Leave a Comment

The Value of WorkWork doesn’t provide just the means of acquiring the basic necessities of life, though that is critical. It enhances the soul and the brain.

When I refer to work, I include all types of employment — salaried, commissioned, hourly, permanent, temporary, and freelance. I also add volunteering; military service, and last but not least, children. For play is the work of children. [Read more…]

What Makes a Leader?

March 5, 2015 By JaneCranston Leave a Comment

What Makes a Leader?Corporations, not-for-profits, and governments are comprised of staff. Most employers are essentially doers and some managers. Where I see the deficit is in the number of true leaders. Not that the opportunities to lead don’t exist at many levels (there is a misconception held by many that leaders are only at the top and all people at the top are leaders) but organizations often fail to recognize, foster, and reward leadership skills. Most people don’t see themselves in the role. Can you be a manager and be a leader, of course you can, but you can also be a manger who doesn’t lead? Yes. [Read more…]
